Many thanks to all who applied, it was the largest number of applications we have ever recieved! It's very exciting to know that so many people are looking to spend a year in the service of the community health needs of Southern California. Congratulations to the new "Navigators"

We will begin recruitment for next year's team in March 2013.

In the meantime, if you are interested in participating in our community service projects, keep an eye on this blog and on the "AltaMed Community HealthCorps" Facebook page. We will announce details of our service projects there as they happen.

Here's to a great service year!

It's been a very busy early summer for our team and the local media is starting to notice!

Escalera HealthCorps member, Jose Fuentes was profiled by EGPnews.com for his great story of  personal academic achievement and service in his transformation from an East L.A Escalera program participant to a 2-year AmeriCorps member returning his talents to his community.

Jessica Armendariz
was also interviewed and profiled by the largest Spanish language newspaper in the country, La Opinión! She has been doing incredible work this year  as a research assistant and interventionist with the USC School of Social Work research project on Geriatric Depression in Latino patients at AltaMed's Adult Day Health Centers.   ( If you don't speak Spanish, cut and paste the article into Google translate to read it in English.)

This Year we partnered with City Year L.A to spend a lovely sunny day to beautify and rehabilitate Edison Middle School in South Los Angeles. We painted murals, refurbished the play-yard and met other volunteers from all over the community. We brought over 30 volunteers -- HealthCorps Alumni, Escalera students, AltaMed co-workers, friends and family. The entire event brought together over 1000 people and was a lot of fun!

Check out photos from the event on our photo page and stay tuned for the video and information about our upcoming

The 2009-1o Full-Time members officially "graduated" on August 13th. We had a lovely commencement banquet with awards, slideshows, videos, and a special keynote speech from AltaMed's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Martin Serota, who led a lively discussion on the place of Community HealthCorps alumni in as Healthcare Reform takes shape.  The moral of the story.. Health Education and Outreach will be highly important roles, "think outside the box" for new ways to serve the healthcare needs of underserved communities!

Best of luck to the 2009-10 HealthCorps graduates, we can't wait to see what you do next.
